Welcome to Module 5

Asessing bladder and bowel conditions

5.1

This module you will focus on how to assess bladder and bowel function, do physical examinations and make a diagnosis.

In this video, Professor Jo Booth welcomes you to week 5.

We start this module with exploring the principles of continence assessment and the importance of assessment in coming to an accurate diagnosis.

Never accept incontinence as ‘just one of those things’, you must investigate, find the cause and establish a treatment plan that will cure or improve symptoms where possible, or at the very least help the individual to find ways to cope and improve their quality of life.

You’ll also find out how physical examinations can help in your assessment and how digital vaginal (female) and digital rectal (male) examination can be used to assess pelvic floor muscles.

Finally, you’ll find out how to diagnose the type of bladder and bowel problem from comprehensive, person-centred assessment with our detailed guidance.

Don’t forget to capture your thinking in your learning log or portfolio as you work through this module’s content.
