Welcome to Module 3
Bladder function
3.1
This module we will focus on bladder dysfunction and you will explore the causes of and the factors affecting bladder function.
In this video, Professor Jo Booth welcomes you to week 3.
Last module you explored what ‘normal’ bladder function is in preparation for this week when you’ll start to consider why and how things may go wrong.
We start this module by looking at the causes of urinary incontinence with clinician Fiona Saunders.
Then we introduce you to four case studies who have different types of urinary incontinence:
- Joyce who has an overactive bladder and Susan who has stress incontinence. You will find out how to identify these types of urinary storage incontinence.
- Jean who has an underactive bladder and James who has bladder outlet obstruction. You will find out how to identify these types of urinary voiding incontinence.
Your task
As you reflect on the experiences of the people in our case studies, we’d like you to think about your own practice. Are there changes you might introduce to your approach to people living with bladder dysfunction?
Don’t forget to capture your thinking in your learning log or portfolio as you work through this module’s content.
