Welcome to Module 4
Bowel function and dysfunction
4.1
This module we will focus on how the bowel works and what normal bowel function is. You will explore the causes of faecal incontinence and different types of bowel dysfunction.
In this video, Janice Reid, Clinical Lead, Western Trust Continence Advisory Services, Northern Ireland, welcomes you to module 4.
We start this module with the anatomy and physiology of the bowel and then move on to look at the causes of faecal incontinence.
You’ll also learn about the different types and causes of bowel dysfunction that people commonly experience.
We introduce you to a case study Jim who has faecal incontinence.
Your task
As you reflect on your approach to supporting people with bowel dysfunction, consider how the causes of bowel incontinence can differ from the causes of bladder incontinence. But see if you can identify any similarities as well.
Don’t forget to capture your thinking in your learning log or portfolio as you work through this module’s content.
